At the beginning of the year, I asked all of my students to answer the question, "Why is art important?" Here are some of their responses:
- "We need to have some color in the world."
- "It's fun!"
- "You can draw things that are real like a tree, then make it unreal and color it blue or pink."
- "Because it gives us an opportunity to get away from the more boring things in class."
- "It helps you write."
- "Because nobody would ask why Mona Lisa smiles!"
- "You can draw things you're worried about."
- "I think art is important because it let's your imagination go wild. When I am in art I feel free. I feel like I can let all my ideas out with nothing stopping me. 'Imagination is more important than knowledge. Knowledge is limited. Imagination encircles the world.' - Albert Einstein"
- "Art is a way to communicate without talking to every individual person."
- "Without art, the world would be boring."
- "Art is a way to express your feelings and let your imagination soar."
- "It's the only time of day where you can draw without getting in trouble."
- "You can free your mind and release your imagination."
- "Art is a way of showing who you are."
- "If I didn't have art, my world would feel empty and colorless."
- "Art is important because it is a way of life. We are all magnificent peices of art. All kids should have art in their life because I find art uplifting and relaxing."
